i don't know, it seems that the distinction between it and regular "animation" is much more genre than medium. the very stylistic differences that define anime set a certain type of mood and are a choice as to what to emphasize and de-emphasize. if it were merely a medium as film is, what would separate it from regular animation?

Activate anime geek mode. Hmm, I would have to go with medium rather than genre on this one. In fact I really don't think an effective argument could be made that anime is a genre if examine it closely. Nothing separates anime from "regular animation" except for where it is produced and while most of it does have a certain look that is instantly recognizable as anime some of it is very distinct. So would we take these odd balls that don't quite fit the mold, take "Canon Fodder" from Memories for example, and say that they aren't anime? Most people don't. What makes anime different is the culture from which it comes and, yes, what they choose to emphasize makes a difference, but it would be an insult to tell those who make animation in Japan that everything they do is merely a genre within animation as a whole. That isn't how they feel about it. Now I'm not saying you should go out and watch a bunch of anime and that it will win you over or anything of the sort. If you don't like it I'm perfectly fine with that. A lot of people don't like comics. A lot of people don't like wine. A lot of people don't like beer. There is nothing wrong with that. What you shouldn't do is say "I don't like comics because they are all about super heroes" or "I don't like wine because I can't stand merlots" or "I don't like beer because of all the pilsners they keep making." This would be a good test. If someone where to watch the following anime what genre would they say each belongs to? Azumanga Daioh Haibane Renmei Kiki's Delivery Service Memories Millennium Actress Neo Tokyo Night on the Galactic Railroad Perfect Blue Serial Experiments Lain Super Dimensional Fortress Macross The Castle of Cagliostro Anime? or comedy, drama, adventure, artistic-endeavor, sci-fi, fantasy, suspense/horror, and so on (not necessarily in that order). And how many of these selections contain "chicks with big boobs"? No, I don't expect any one to go out and watch all these its just for argument's sake, and yes there is a lot of anime out there that have "chicks with big boobs" . . . . . . and a lot of beers are pilsners. ...

well based on what you just said, the only difference between anime and bugs bunny is that anime is from japan. this would seem to mean that by describing something as anime, no real distinction is to be made. there are different storylines just as comics have different themes and storylines, but that doesn't mean that there is no common theme conveyed by the style. when defining a category, you look at its average charactertistics. if anime contains no more specific themes or stytles than animation broadly, it doesn't seem something one could claim is anything different from animation, or any more "beautiful" etc. by the way, i have nothing against anime and was just making a joke, but i do think there is some merit to finding it more genre than medium.

personally, i would argue genre, simply because of the existence of sub-genres. futuristic cyberpunk, medieval/magical, school girl misadventures (often complete with wacky household), and that's just to name the settings most common to anime. in_my_oh_so_humble_opinoin, of course. within these settings you will find drama (akira, mononoke, kenshin ovas), comedy (samurai x, dragon half), action (fist of the north star, nightstalkers [yeah, so it's from a video game], and, of course, hentai (la blue girl, legend of the overfiend). anyway, what i'm saying is that not all japanese animation is anime, but anime is a distinct medium, much like american action, chinese martial art, or english crime frolic.
