if you have an arrow up or arrow down and a select button, then you shouldn't need numbers.

some key features are encoded as secrets on the disc in such a way that you need the number keys to access them

for instance there is an outtake reel in the Episode II dvd that only pops up by going to the THX Audio Set-up screen and entering the numbers "1138" also, the special edition Memento DVD has a really tricky menu system, and i think you almost do need the numbers (and a cheat sheet) to see everything

what about purchasing a 'universal remote'?!

supposely i have one. and it doesn't work. all my tvs responds to it, but not the dvd. in "the wall" the secret clips can only be accessed by pressing the number 9. in "moulin rouge" you need to enter a code number to see a clip featuring ewan. technology is so unfair.

My dvd player remote control DOES have numbers but they are useless. if i press 7 while the dvd plays it doesn't go to track 7 of the film or anything. try harder.

holy shit! that's what I have! I never even heard of the Apex brand before, but it was a gift. I don't want to seem ungrateful, but... my problem is, it's tuned to my television, so when I want to pause, the TV turns off. There are many other wierd functions, like the FWD button makes it go to chammel 3. it's the freakiest thing - I still haven't figured out all of the different functions, becasue who has the time? shouldn't it just work properly? I put tape over the remote sensor on the TV and change channels through the VCR. to turn it off, I get up and do it manually. at least I'm getting exercise. thanks Apex, for keeping me busy and confused over the holidays...

the real reason apex became popular was because many of their older models were hackable you could turn off regions and macrovision and in some cases install your own screensaver

for the Sony, i would suggest looking for another remote for the machine, simply put, either another brand, or another Sony model with the numbers... as for the Apex, i would say you might have a coding issue if the DVD remote doubles as a universal. This could be why it seems to want to control your other appliances (wow, you have the George W Bush of remote controls - trying to control everything in ways it was never intended to) my first suggestion would be to see if it is a "universal" remote and if so, to try reprogramming the remote with all of the proper codes for each appliance you want the remote to serve (a quick google search should turn up a few sites that specialize in universal remote codes) if that doesn't work, find out if there are any newer model universal remotes that include DVD functions and work from there

thanks, wingedSerpent. there were no codes in the manual, and there was no reference to the remote being a universal one, but the manual is less than vague, so who knows... when it really becomes a problem again, i'll give your advice a shot!
