Weeds are growing up, out of the cattle gaurds. Driving home at night, the sudden sight of these walls of green causes fleeting panic, as I'm momentarily convinced that I'm driving off the road. My three mile diving drive down the mountain to the river, and then back up to the next ridge is still a thrill ride for me and my generic hatchback. Its been almost a month since I escaped the city and life suddenly came to life again.

In defense of squirrels...... You said that they were exceptionally stupid animals, and that they panic when in danger (e.g. running down the tree trunk, when barked at by a dog.) Today, as I was driving, a squirrel ran down the tree trunk, onto the road, in front of my car, and tryed to outrun the car. Stupid? No. Panic is an adaptation which allows a prey animal to take sudden, unpredictable, evasive action. It is unpredictable and sudden because it is not "planned". That unplanned action may at times lead to a bad end, sure, but it may also provide the extra fraction of a second needed to escape the claw.

Thumper RIP Last night it happened; I killed a jack rabbit driving home. I didn't see it untill his? last instant of life. The image of his face, with the big, bright orange right eye, just inches from the left headlight of my car, is gonna stay with me for the rest of my life. I stopped to get his body off the road. He looked ironically healthy, a beatiful coat, only a bit ruffled from the collision. His eyes were so bright under my flashlight, I thought for a second that he must be still alive, only stunned. When I saw the lights of another car approaching I picked him up by his feet and carryed him to the side of the road. He was dead limp and still warm. I had been aware that my nightly drive was a menace to wildlife on this lighty traveled mountain road, I had even guessed that I would most likely hit a squrill or rabbit because of their complete lack of road sense, but that image of this beautiful rabbit, dramaticaly illuminated, eye wide open, I feel honored to have been there to witness it.

Last night, when I reached the one lane bridge at the bottom of my mountain, a porcupine was standing gaurd. It was in the very middle of this very narrow bridge, facing my car. If I proceded, it would die. I rolled to a stop, it didn't budge, just stood its ground all bristled out. I flashed my high beams repeatedly and started to slowly roll toward him/(it/she?). It finally ambled off. Another glorious victory of man over nature.
