so there's a thousand and one free shows, for ten days or so and i told people it was brilliant and to go with me, but they didn't, so i went alone, and wandered the streets, in search of a strain of music that i could lose myself in and some days i'd find it, and others i wouldn't, instead peering over people's heads at the fireeaters and jugglers and street acrobats and there was this reggae group... dub reggae, the description said, but no matter, they were wonderfully chaotic and repetitive and did cool things with the machine that does cool things with sound and then hiphop... which i loved because the cool androgynous (from a distance, at least) mc was so wonderfully verbose (the only reason i love rap... gangsta rap is stupid, but the politicalish or just passionate type where they form winding rhythms with their words is music_to_die_for) and it's amusingly self-referential they sang "fifty ways to leave your lover" too, which also rocked and they channelled michael jackson occasionally, and got the crowd to scream P-P-P!!! at them, overandoverandover and that was also beautiful, in a grinning constantly i'm-not-supposed-to-like-hiphop-right way and this random blues band... caught the last couple songs they played, and wanted more, but they were only playing again at half-past-midnight and the last bus leaves not too much past then and pat_metheny and glorious other stuff that i don't know quite what it was... some gorgeous melodic rhythmic stuff (from the middle east/africa, i believe) with the percussion part and the music-y part kind of weaving around eachother, trading places occasionally and there was ever so much more i'm so addicted... and going back next year
