'more important, all americans 'make' and 'take' over their lives, and no business or individual is truly self-made, no matter how hardworking and innovative. children take. adults make. the elderly take again. even those working adults who are makers are takers too, benefiting from roads, police protection, foreign policy, clean water, and so on. those out of the labor force who are takers are often also makers, such as stay-at-home parents and kids who are in school to boost their later earnings. everybody pays something in, and everybody gets something out. everybody deserves to pay in, and everybody deserves to get something out. everybody benefits from paying in, and everybody benefits from getting something out. ideally, a UBI would be an acknowledgement that our market economy leaves people out and behind, creating poverty and punishing individuals who cannot or are not working for an employer...a UBI would undercut the basis of such (negative) judgements and be a powerful force for human dignity. it would acknowledge our interdependence as well as our independence.' - annie lowery
