Yesterday we met.
We told eachother our names.
We compared hands by pressing our palms together.
I showed you a leaf I found on the sidewalk.
We fed some bread and smooth green seeds to the swans.
I showed you how to make helicopters from maple keys.
You ruffled the sand.
I showed you the petals that look like they are made of shiny yellow tin.
Little round balls of plumy feathers floating from that tree.
Somewhat like snow in the dark afternoon sunlight.
You took me closer,
I was shy and laughed and wouldn’t look at you,
Elusive I fled and we chased over the grass.
You caught me on the ground and we kissed a little.
Yours lips were playful,
But you gave me a look more serious than any I had known.
You have such a funny way about you;
I have such a heart that takes to the trees,
Or the ocean which is part of things too,
And you watch me so amusedly from the shadows.
You don’t know me very well,
And I don’t know you very well,
We’re still strangers and foreign,
Even loving eachother this long while.
I know myself, though, and
We only met yesterday.
