pete I recently returned a book to my school's library about 5 days late. The fine came up as 2.50$ Fair enough I earned it.

Today I received an automated email saying that they are billing me 95$ to get a replacement because the book is too damaged to be used. This occurred around this time last summer as well (I deserved it then, the book was in my back pack while I was biking home through a torrenting thunderstorm from work) and I happily paid the 50$ they charged me and waited for the book to return to the shelves. It has still not been replaced...

This current book was slightly worse for wear when I returned it. Completely usable, in my opinion. You can buy much worse books from the used book stores and find even worse ones on the library's shelves. They want me to pay 95$ to (likely not) replace a usable book that, this is the most outrageous part of the whole affair, costs 35$ from Chapters.

Stupid bastards :S

dosquatch Contest it. If you go in with the bill and make a little bit of a scene, asking them to show you *why* the book is so damaged it must be replaced, they'll likely cancel the charge just to make you go away. 070808

falling_alone i lost a book and offered to replace it myself, instead of paying 7 for a fine i offered to pay 14 to actually make sure the same book was replaced. they wouldn't accept it, something about deals with the industry and probably some black market shit they had organized....

found it recently and keeping it.
