ever dumbening sitting around mom and dad's nice teak coffee table and out comes the deck of cards—slippery, new, from their recent trip to alaska.

ever since hearts has been a part of our electronic world, i've had trouble playing it in print. it just seems to move so slowly. so i opt out, while the others dive right in.

instead, i become the sound fx man. waiting patiently to unleash my version of the tightly pitched window break ... kssshhh. and just around the bend, ah yes, here she comes—boowwwuuueee—the evil temptress, the queen of spades.

i grow distracted with my duties, reading the new yorker or some such. my nephew, irked by my slacking, reminds me to chime in with my foley arts. i brush him off, and laugh as he continues to have troubles with his cards sliding clear across the table.

kssshhh.
