'the gospel according to thomas, discovered in 1945 in egypt, is a gnostic gospel, and there's simply no problem in equating buddhist ideas with the christian ones and with the classical mystery religions. when jesus says there, 'he who drinks from my mouth will become as i am and i shall be he,' he's saying just what gautama would say: all things are buddha things. all beings are christ beings and the christ within us is to be found, recognized, and transformed into the source of our living. this is sheer buddhism, using the term christ instead of buddha consciousness. then you can read buddha consciousness back to the mystery regions. part of that common universal tradition of death and resurrection - death to your animal nature and resurrection of your spiritual nature - is inflected already from the mystery traditions into the christian traditions.' - joseph campbell !!!!! |
