in the time i am away from you, i lose my skin, a unravelling of protection. not the snake that slithers out of the impending past, pushing forth out of patterns of texture and color to reach, but more so the tree, attacked by insects, that drops its bark, rendering it vulnerable to disease. wrap me up in the cloak of your love. smother me with many kisses, like scarves that only allow my eyes to be visible and then press them with your fingers so the lingering touch will warn them to be careful of what they look upon. when the cold tempts, the warm heart will not know. if i am to be in the absence of you, alone, it cannot come to good.
