Barthes asserts that perceiving a photograph is "a temporal hallucination." This must mean "an hallucination," because as far as I know there is no such thing as a "non-temporal" hallucination, at least not for people who are not dead. Be that as it may, surely some photographs are more hallucinogenic than others. Further, any photograph should be rendered more hallucinogenic for a person perceiving same, if the person consumes an hallucinogenic substance shortly beforehand by a route appropriate for the substance's hallucinogenic effects. |
