epitome of incomprehensibility I had this phrase in my head for some reason with no idea what it was.

Grand Guignol was a French theatre, open from 1897-1962, best known for its horror plays. There have been various revivals of its plays and its aesthetic - probably an influence on the gory if somewhat tongue-in-cheek kind of horror movie, as well as things like EC comics. But it's also French, so there's going to be some highfalutin theoretical explorations of its dramatic modes... (stereotypical much, e_o_i?)

An example is this article about one of its plays, but it's as much practical as theoretical, since the author is from a troop actually staging the thing: http://theatredamned.blogspot.ca/2010/11/violence-and-vitriol-exploring-le.html

And I learned that vitriol isn't just anger, but an actual corrosive acid. Who said that wasting time on the Internet doesn't teach you anything?
