Janice our intern wanted to take the 9 of us in the Philosophy class out to Friendlys so we could have ice cream and she could ask us questions and tape record us. The five stoics, including myself, followed through on our denial of unnecessary pleasures and drank water. Jon chewed on toothpicks furiously. Alex and I sat on the booth and smiled. We sat there for an hour and a half, and the waittress had to refill our water glasses. We decided to give her a $9 tip and felt excellent about our self control and our sily generoisity. Then we walked back to the dorm and Jon told me about the feeling he gets sometimes when he feels like he is aware of everything that is going around him, when he snowboards. He thinks it is almost like euphoria, but in an almost-perfect sense.
