waiting for me to pass so they could cross the street. Instead, I braked to a stop so they could cross and watched them as they set out. When they were almost directly in front of me, their heads turned as_one to stare at me, and I got the feeling that I was being somehow judged. With no time to think of anything else, I just bowed my head politely. The farthest girl waved at me, and then they were past and safely across. After I'd driven on to the stoplight it dawned on me that they had been holding hands.
