Who was that norse king? or was he swedish...Kanute? He stood in front of the ocean and would not stop untill he conquered every wave - stared them down - would not rest untill they recognized his sovreignity. And I don't know if you've ever stood in front of waves, but it feels possible if you take it one wave at a time and don't realize that to explain one wave, you need to explain the one before it and then the one before that all of them and even the ones that will and might come or have already come to some god who is spread like non fat butter across time. And then you have to explain why the waves that will come really can only be said to might come, and why it's might, and you understand that it's because something about the waves is always eluding you. Because there's too many points of view to take, and then you realize, that you haven't even conquered one wave, because in some sense it has the entire ocean. And by standing there, you've already surrendered. And if you could only conquer just one wave people would mean so much less. And was kanute swedish or danish? if he was danish, at least a delicious breakfast pastry came of his struggle.
