FEMA Director Michael Brown's position previous to his appointment to his current post was as some sort of lawyer for the International Arabian Horse Show Association for 11 years before being fired from his job for unspecified "management failures" He was recommended for the position by his friend and predecessor in the top slot at FEMA, Joseph Allbaugh when Allbaugh resigned the post to work for the Bush/Cheney '04 Campaign and then as the Legislative Liason (the polite government word for "lobbyist") for HAlliburton/KBR So, with no relevant experience in the areas of disaster preparedness or disaster response, the guy gets put in charge of the Federal agency whose sole mandate is preparedness and response and the best he can do when confornted with the humantirian crisis that resulted from the hurricane is to say (and i'm paraphrasing, somewhat) "well, it was a mandatory evacuation, we did tell everyone to leave." as if that absolves him of any further responsibility. Sorry, director brown, but you are a stupid fuck if you think your responsibility as the head of the Federal EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT agency just means saying, "oh, by the way, y'all should just get the fuck out now" you're wrong. It also means co-ordinating and facilitating evacuation efforts with state county and municipal entities

When I first heard about the evacuations, before the hurricane hit, I remember thinking, that's strange, they're just telling people to get out but no-one's saying anything about what they have in place for those who rely on public transport. Oh well, I thought, they must have something in place. It's not like they would just abandon people is it?

Well, yeah, they would. turns out that none of Dir. Brown's top 3 deputy directors are quite qualified for this sort of thing either Besides, VP Cheney stayed on vacation for a good while, Sec. of State Condoleeza Rice was in NYC catching a Broadway show and shopping for shoes and it was not until it was clear that the shit had done a fantastic job of hitting the fan in New Orleans that Chimpy McAss-pipe cut short his vacation from his fake ranch in Texas (fucker isn't even from Texas, he's from Connecticut...that accent is as fake as everything else about the sonofabitch) where he was doing an admirable job of hiding from Cindy Sheehan. The whole of the federal response to Hurricane Katrina puts the lie to Shrub's insistences, when pressed about his "war on terror", that America (or as he says it " 'Murika" ) is Safer because of his administration These people have never been the type to let reality get in the way of a well-played talking-point

how do you guys keep the energy to keep criticizing when there's just so much that needs addressing and no evidence that most people care. i always start to write an essay and then stop myself and think...will this convince anyone who isn't on my side already? or is this just a rant i need to get off my chest for my own purposes? the state of the world is depressing, but i guess in some ways it always has been. ah well...keep fighting the good fight. i hope i regain my vigour.

i, too, always wonder about our endless preaching to the choir. maybe it's a matter of trying to reach a critical mass. if we continue to talk about it, and take action along the way, those who are either uncertain or even opposed to what we think and feel might start to realize the sheer weight of evidence against these clowns. probably not, but i'm not sure we have any other hope to hang our aluminum hats on. yes, there's plenty of hyperbole and opinion coming from both (all) sides, but there is such a huge pile of facts, yes, actual facts that condemn the current administration, that it's partly just a matter of gently cramming this oversized and ever-growing pill down the throats and into the minds of the poor sods who have been spun to think otherwise. granted, it's hard to do when using reason and logic and a college education are seen as elitist. and, jimbo, just to use senor bird as an example, he has put stuff on here that i knew in a general sense, but not the specifics thereof. from those bits i've gone on other flights of research fancy. of course it's sort of a case of finding things that support what we already believe, but mr mad has certainly added to my knowledge base and also stirred my desire to dig deeper. so, yeah, he's fighting the good fight, and i hope you regain the strength to do so too, as you also have a strong mind capable of bringing change. i often struggle to figure out the best way for me to contribute. you're right, talk only does so much, but we have to start somewhere. reminding each other to act helps too.
