unhinged 'this tune sounds like whitefish bay'

i could see the cougars running in their skimpy outfits to keep their assets in line. the little ones at the park near the high school waving at the bus. the suvs, all the annoyingly little designer dogs.

*snooooore*

but the drummer had some serious rock in him; an interesting kit with a tiny splash cymbal on the snare. and several times he looked like animal.

and then right as we were leaving the second trumpet player showed up and it got infinitely more interesting in just the 30 seconds that i heard. the jazz_duel is one of the only things that makes sense to my classical ears.

unhinged branford marsalis as interviewed by someone in the seattle weekly:

'what are you trying to reinvent? there are only 12 fucking notes.' sic

years ago he lectured in youngstown and it was standing room only. everyone at the school was there, regardless of the kind of music we were studying. i remember ten years ago being captivated.

this morning i was reading the seattle weekly with my morning coffee and i came across a short article/interview/transcription of branford marsalis. and i have hope for my art again.

he bemoaned the jazzer / composer attitude of innovation and asked us all to get back to melody.

because 99% of people you know don't give a shit about chord progression, harmonic structure, or instrumental innovation.

they just want to hear something pretty.
