i was in slovenia last year as part of a foreign studies program at brown university and was drawn to the gypsy culture. they all look like they are living on the edge of everything we protect ourselves from. i remember watching this little girl who looked about twelve, but from another century, and she was at the back of a very plain tavern with her much younger brother, and the two of them are tentative, watching the men drink. as a single accordion player entertains the sparse crowd, the girl watches, knowing, smiling, shy. there is such purity in her face and then she begins to dance with her brother. a sense of mastery comes out of her, like a strong, shiny shoot because she's been watching the older women carefully and she knows the shoot is going to the flower. i wanted what they have, time for all those deep long breaths, time to watch more closely, time to learn to enjoy what i've always been afraid of, for all these holy moments, time to have more adventures... what is the latest adventure you have been on?
