pete she died sometime in the night, an abandoned pet, left behind by a girl who we all thought would have cared more for the life she had taken on.

lorraine was sickly, we didn't expect her to last much longer. the move from the basement to the second floor was too much on her fragile system. within two days she lay in the shavings, dead.

not being christians, but just being decent people, we knew we had to bury her. while i dug a hole with a blunt shovel in the back yard, beneath the pine tree, leah made a makeshift coffin out of a granola bar box.

we placed her in the hole, knelt over the grave filling it up. leah washed her hands, i found a rock near the house and, using a nail, etched "Lorraine August 25 2005" into it. Leah returned with wild flowers, placing them ontop of the makeshift gravestone.

we stood there, solemnly, for a few moments. the only words we knew to say were prayers, and not being christians and the one buried being a rat it just didn't seem right to pray for lorraine. we said "goodbye" and stepped back slowly, leaving lorraine in her peace.
