birdmad supports the right to arm bears i am a pro-gun liberal, whether one believes there can be such a thing or not.

I share the same general belief as many on the far right who believe that a time may one day come when i must defend myself from my own government

I believe that i have the right to be secure in my own home and to defend both loved ones and belongings with appropriate force

I also believe that there are those who are not to be trusted with weaponry and that some appropriate measures should be taken to prevent some people from ownership.

I believe that even by my own standards, i may not be deemed fit to own a firearm, but i'll burn that bridge when i get to it.

dafremen Ok, so I'm thinking about this whole gun control debate. It seemed particularly important that we not have people going around shooting innocent bystanders.

To me, that made it important to determine how many people are actually being killed with firearms against their will. That way I can have an idea of the actual extent of the problem.

So I go to look up the data at the Center for Disease Control:

Total firearm deaths: 33,636
Firearm suicides: 21,175

Ok so now..according to my math, that means of the 33,000 people killed by firearms, only 12,500 didn't pull the trigger themselves.

That means we're really talking about guns only being responsible for 12,500 victims per year in a nation of 316 MILLION guns and 318 MILLION people. That's a very very small fraction of one percent.

It also means that our "firearm deaths" problem is really a suicide problem.

But then I thought to myself: "But guns make it EASIER for people to commit suicide." Maybe that's why our firearm suicides are so much higher. Maybe guns cause our suicide rate to be outrageous because its so easy to pull a trigger? Maybe.

That would mean if GUNS are the problem, we should have a higher suicide rate than other First World nations that have stricter gun laws.

So I went to Wikipedia. Wikipedia says we have the 50th highest suicide rate in the world. South Korea has practically no guns, but has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Guess they are finding other ways to kill themselves besides guns. Anyone want to bet that our suicides who shot themselves would have found another way? Maybe not death by fugu, but still..people can be creative about offing themselves when there's no gun available.

In fact, the following countries with stricter gun laws have higher suicide rates than than the United States:

Japan
Finland
Belgium
Poland (lowest gun ownership in EU)
Iceland
South Korea (One of the strictest gun policies in the world)

(There are more..but I'm tired of looking them up.)

My final word is this: What some people are calling a gun problem isn't a gun problem at all. 2/3rds of gun deaths are people offing themselves. And when guns aren't available, they are still offing themselves. Sometimes at higher rates. The same goes for people who are killing other people. They are finding other ways when they are intent on killing.

Regulating guns will not change the attitudes that have people killing themselves and others. And based on the FACTS (not the rhetoric or the tears..the FACTS) it's not guns that are killing people. It's people and their attitudes toward the society they live in (and the other people in it) that are killing people. It's depressed, disillusioned people who seem to be doing most of the killing in our society. What if we debated how to fix that instead?

Maybe we should focus on taking better care of our people and asking them what they need instead of always trying to tell them what to do.

dafremen "questions are mounting over why the shooter Omar Mateen was legally able to buy an assault rifle and handgun despite having been investigated twice by the FBI for suspected terrorist sympathies."

Here it comes. Soon you won't have to be a FELON to be denied a gun, simply suspected of something and investigated by the government. How to disarm the populace with its own help. Notice how they aren't doing anything to improve the mental health of our people? There's a reason for that. Each crazy motherf---er who goes off gives them the excuse to lock down the rest of us with oppressive laws.

I've heard too many people use the "Islam is coming to get us" bullshit when talking for OR against gun control. I think that's a distraction and no one should pay attention to it much. What's coming to get us is our own government. In fact, it's pretty much got us..guns or no guns..but for GAWD sake, let's not make it easy. Let's not just hand them the f---ing gun so they see us as stupid, naive, easily-fooled punks.

Gun control advocates: You want a solution that isn't gun control?

Here:

How about we start paying attention to what we put on TV, on the radio, on our phones and see how much of it we REALLY have to have to enjoy our lives as human beings. I mean if we're so BORED that we have to watch hour after hour of people brutalizing each other in order to get their way (whether its the hero or the villain), watch dysfunctional families insult each other to uproarious guffaws while friends also insult, lie to and otherwise treat each other like crap..I mean if we HAVE to stare in through people's bedroom windows at their undulating butts in every movie..we gotta be screwed-in-the-head bored..don't you think? And if we LITERALLY have been driven to degrade, humiliate and obsess over ourselves in order to get the world's attention..doesn't that also seem to indicate that our way of living is unsatisfying..and perhaps we should address it? We've become sex, violence and escape obsessed because our roles and lives in this society don't satisfy us. Bugs and lizards obsess over food and sex too..not exactly our most shining moment or the best use of our human potential.

You want to solve the problem of random people walking into random places and blowing random strangers away? First off, you stop publicizing the crap out of it. Stop sensationalizing violence and tragedy in the media and entertainment(just to keep a f---ing job..there's that money motive again.)

Don't think politicians or lawyers are going to solve our problems either, they love this stuff. It's called job security. No tragedy? No need for more laws or more lawyers.

Politicians aren't going to solve our problems. You know what will?

Creating a social atmosphere that inclines people to seek SATISFACTION in life over money. EMPHASIZING social health over the economy. PROVIDING SERVICES FOR THE MENTALLY ILL. Teaching children coping skills in school. How about if we stop lying to children about stupid things for no reason if we don't want a world full of liars and the people who have been scarred by their manipulations? The Easter bunny is not real. Neither is Santa Claus. Stop telling them they are..oh yea..its to bolster the economy so f--- the kids and their perception of the value of truth in our society. F--- them when they learn they've been lied to by this world of liars, become disillusioned and lash out. (Oh no wait..that's F--- US..isn't it?)

You want to solve the "gun violence" problem? Give people a reason to like the people around them a bit more. Teach children respect, not division. Lose the f---ing team sport mentality and "competitive drive" bullshit. We're all in this together. F--- teams. F--- Liberal and Conservative. We are Americans. We are humans. We are brothers and sisters fighting for some direction..some path through time that will lead us to the freedom and happiness we promised ourselves back in 1776.

This money grubbing, manipulative, who-can-be-the-king-monkey-on-the-highest-branch bullshit is NOT the way. And for as long as we teach that way of thinking to our children some of them will either, IMPLODE and destroy us like the assholes at ENRON or EXPLODE and destroy us like the asshole in Orlando.

You want a solution to the gun violence problem? Stop proposing an oversimplified solution to a very complex problem and get ready to do some real work instead. Get ready to BE a better person if you want a better world. Step outside of your head and look around you.

Gun victims aren't the only ones getting gunned down..this whole way of living is a bullet to the brain.

unhinged oh lord...cause letting domestic abusers and terrorist sympathizers have access to assault weapons is exactly what the second amendment of the constitution says *rollseyes* common sense gun control doesn't stop us from standing up to the damn government. if you want to stand up to the government demand that we have paper ballots and not hackable voting machines when we vote. demand that we end citizens united.

but yes, we should be focused on something better as a society. we shouldn't let kids watch or play games filled with violence. we shouldn't allow ourselves to be desensitized to selfishness and greed. yesterday i was on my lunch break and some asshole that walks around downtown and the transit center of the other city i work in begging for spare change started yelling 'fucking faggot' as he walked through the place. later in the evening i was helping a woman with two kids pay for some clothes and her very young son, maybe four years old at most, had his eyes glued to a smart phone that had the sounds of guns shooting pouring out of it. i was disgusted that the woman didn't seem to give a shit that she was conditioning her child to gun violence. as long as he wasn't bothering her i guess...lets continue to restrict abortion and let every crazy asshole buy automatic rifles (instead of giving them health services) and all sit around and cry about how more people are killed.

restricting guns won't destroy the constitution or stop us from changing our government. the wealthy elite of this country have already made sure they own and control the government. and in the meantime it is the rest of us that are murdered by crazy people. but lets just keep letting them have access to guns cause...the constitution. stupidest argument ever.
