could it mean that our hands are specialized; meant to do different things?
the words associated with left & right might bear this out:
left- sinister, ominous, awkward, magic powers, receptive/passive
[usually associated with female]
right- moral, accurate, external powers, active
[usually associated with male]
the negative connotations of leftness and the attempt to make right-handedness unanimous may have to do with the fear of wimmin's powers, especially those of the right brain.

all through kindergarten my left hand was in a cast so i was forced to learn how to write with my right hand
many many years later
an art teacher told em to draw with my left hand
and i found that i draw much better with the left but still can't write as neatly as with the right
