sameolme Near the end ofthe movie, Empire Of The Sun, containers of food dropped from the sky. The U.S. airforce was parachuting large containers of food
to the people in a war ravaged part of
China.
A year ago, it was Bam, Iran that was devastated, this year its a widespread area bordering the Indian Ocean. Both then and now I regret that the world has not risen to the challenge of preparing for these inevitable disasters. Yes, the world is mobilizing to help, but the capability
to provide immediate substantial aid is not there, and it could be.
A rapidly deployable aid force needs to be developed in order to deal with these disasters. The US has a military
capacity to meet sudden political emergencies around the world and could develop the capacity to meet sudden natural emergencies. Our airbases around the world could have warehouses stocked with emergency supplies. These supplies could be containerized in modular form to provide the flexibility needed to meet specific situations. A lead organization, perhaps the Red Cross,
could provide coordination and have the authority to commandeer aircraft from the military when needed. People with skills needed for quick disaster response could be trained as part of an 'aid reservist' organization in waiting.
I can't design this "Rapid Deployment
Aid Force", but the knowledge and skills that are needed already exist in military and commercial organizations.
What is lacking is the will. I believe that if the US was as focused on battling suffering as it now is on defeating enemies, that our enemies would perish from within.
I pray for those that are suffering,
and I pray for the birth of an
Empire of the Heart.
