to peel a grapefruit... i find myself eating grapefruit quite often in the latter half of a trip... i first peel all the outer skin off, the tough hide that sprays its tangy perfume into the air, sharp citrus making distorted tastebuds quiver. then, i separate a single slice from the fruit... this usually involves digging a thumb into the center, through the top... like invading an orifice... then, slowly, gently, separating the parts that have been so close since their formation... the softball-sized fruit in the hard case falling into ever smaller bits... then, with that single slice, remove all the white stuff from the outside. hate it. really do. then, picking or peeling as daintily as neccessary to keep all the pulpy bits intact, remove the final layer of skin... if it's done with enough skill, the outer arc will flip back, revealing nothing but pure pulp, miniature explosions of tart and sweet and juicy, individual bits to be squished between teeth like so many tiny creatures... i once described this process as eating squirrel guts... try it sometime, it's a very rewarding experience... grapefruit distilled, all the best bits worked for, none of the nastiness.
