shadflies
anne-girl or mayflies, apparently
i just found out that they only live for a few days, mate and die
there are cars covered in them, bright tennis courts plastered in their bodies... crunching underfoot
swirling around streetlamps, near the water

they don't bite, they're tragic, what's not to love?

Strideo I suppose having to wash them off your car is what's not to love but still, what a fleeting life that is! Wake up, propagate the species, die.

On the other hand being a mayfly is only the final stage of their lives. I just read some things about them and I found out that they may live as Naiads under water for many months or up to a few years depending on the species. Of course they among the favorite food of fishies during this period.

Then when they become "adults" or "flies" they don't even have fully developed digestive systems so they die quickly. Some only manage to stick around for as little as 30 seconds!

"The lifespan of an adult mayfly can vary from just 30 minutes to one day depending on the species." O_O

So I guess they really need to get busy!

Curse you anne-girl! You made me learn stuff! XD

epitome of incomprehensibility I didn't know they called the larvae Naiads. Mythical water spirits, and bugs. Hmm. The nearby swimming pool and its showers are particularly glutted with these insects (the adults, that is) in July.

They also shed their skin (I've seen them in the process, and spent time picking the strangely ghostlike skins off clothes I've hung outside to dry). So that's one more thing they can do with their lives.
