her bright smile caught his breath. he couldn't take his eyes off of her. 'oh my GOD...this is not my valentine's day present,' she squealed. she laid down on the ground on her belly to put her face right in the face of the puppy. she started playing with his ears and the dog backed away impatiently. 'he is great. do you know what breeds?' the dog had the look of a mutt about him, the shape of the muzzle somehow mismatched from his height, the body shape. he shook his head to clear the distracting daydreams of what he wanted for them as a couple now that she had accepted the puppy. 'rodesian ridgeback and black labrador retriever. i guess ridgebacks were bred to be lion hunting dogs. this dog is gonna be a BEAST.' he reached down and started rough housing with the dog. the dog leapt up and started nipping at his fingers. 'nooo...no biting. sit.' the dog gave him what could only be described at puppy dog eyes, a plaintive look through canine lashes. 'stay.' he released his hand from around the dogs jaw. the dog lunged forward. 'no. stay.' 'you are good with him. what should we call him?' she sidled up to him and nestled her face into his neck. he grabbed her around the waist 'well since i picked him out, i thought you should name him.' the fragrance of the blooms on the mango tree and the smell of her new dreadlocks drifted to him and he squeezed her. 'we should call him hiro.' her smile widened. 'hero? really?' he started jabbing her in the ribs. 'no. not hero. h-i-r-o. hiro. its japanese for big.' as they disentangled from their game of school yard irritations the puppy tripped over his own paws chasing after a bird in the yard. he laughed 'yeah; thats a good name for him. i think he's gonna be huge. hiro...yeah.' he started nodding.
