in the middle of a competitive endeavor against another male sometimes i feel a vague dread. i think, what if this was a hunter-gatherer society and this was the sole measure of my attractiveness. what if i would have my wife and children taken from me if i didn't do this one thing right. i mean modern society is like this in some ways, it's just there is a greater number of valid tests. but there may be societies where it is reduced to one or two major tests, depending on what you need to be good at to survive in that corner of the world.
