Years ago, I began my DVD collection with four movies that I considered essential: Fight Club American Psycho Equilibrium The Usual Suspects One night, I realized that my small collection had a connecting thread for all but one of the movies, and it went like this: Jared Leto has a role in Fight Club as well as in American Psycho. Christian Bale starred in American Psycho with Jared Leto, as well as in Equilibrium. Curious. On a whim I bought Mystic River, and then Shawshank Redemption, both with Tim Robbins. I wondered how I could connect these movies with the others, through the actors. In the meantime, I was able to justify adding the Lord of the Rings trilogy to the collection, because Sean Bean is in the trilogy as well as in Equilibrium. I got American History X because of the connection with Edward Norton in Fight Club. I got The Devil's Own because of Brad Pitt, also in Fight Club. 3:10 to Yuma, Christian Bale, American Psycho. Gladiator, Russell Crowe, 3:10 to Yuma. Devil's Advocate, Connie Nielsen, Gladiator. Matrix, Keanu Reeves, Devil's Advocate... But still, The Usual Suspects bothered me. I did not have a connection. It was an orphan movie. Or so I thought...until I found the missing link, and a movie that I have seen a number of times: Seven. Duh. Fight Club, Brad Pitt, Seven, Kevin Spacey, The Usual Suspects. And then a wonderful thing happened...Seven connected Mystic River with the collection, through Shawshank Redemption. I swear it was like I just unlocked an achievement on Xbox. I'm such a nerd. So now, when I consider a new movie for the collection, I have to track back through the actors to see how (or if) it connects back to Fight Club. Super Troopers, for example, stars Brian Cox, who is also in X-Men, with Ian McKellan, who is also in Lord of the Rings, with Sean Bean, who is also in Equilibrium, with Christian Bale, who is also in American Psycho, with Jared Leto, who is also in Fight Club.

I have to confess, My latent ocd draws me to the little webs of connection Ed Norton: The Incredible Hulk-- William Hurt, Tim Roth, Liv Tyler William Hurt-- Kiss of the Spider Woman -- Raul Julia -- Addams family -- Anjelica Huston -- Prizzi's Honor-- Jack Nicholson (i dunno, maybe this weird innate ability to cross reference things is why I rather excel as a file clerk because I can list volumes without needing a secondary reference, haha) Tim Roth-- Pulp Fiction -- Samuel L. Jackson -- Star Wars prequels-- Natalie Portman, (Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Lee) -- Leon -- Gary Oldman --Book of Eli --,Denzel Washington
