if actual randomness exists (not the appearance of, but real quantum randomness at a basic level of physical reality), then anything that is coincident is an actual coincidence. for more on coincidence, follow the link to the STOCHASTICITY episode of radiolab. it is an amazingly accessible explanation of a very abstract idea. http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/episodes/2009/09/11

Do you believe in "real quantum randomness "? Can it be demonstrated?

i do not believe in it, as such, because, as far as i know it cannot be demonstrated. however, my cousin (who has a PHD in laser physics and is the department chair at a university) explained that most physicists infer that it is true, because some very arcane proofs can only work if it is true. these same proofs have concrete, demonstrable experiments based on them. oddly, one of these proofs directly contradicts an established proof in classical physics. my cousin reports that a vast majority of physicists (he said 97% off the cuff) today consider randomness a fact. Where do you stand?

just trying to keep up here, but are you saying that "real quantum randomness" and chaos_theory are mutually_exclusive?

I stand down. I don't feel qualified to have an opinion, but here goes anyway. Randomness is not so much a fundamental principle as much as it is like a dimension or aspect of existence. The terrain on which pattern prances.

yesterday i rode the bus past the spot we had dinner at 16_months_ago and the boy i'm with now crossed my mind (we've been going through hard times) at the same time tonight i heard from you for the first time in a long time 'i'm in town for the night and was wondering if...' i was waiting to hear from him and once again all the things that looked good on paper meant nothing you were perfect on paper and once again you meant nothing

Hey z, I don't know any physicists or people who do and I have a question that a physicist might be able to answer. Could you, would you, ask for me? This might take a while so bear with me. Here goes: If 11 dimensions are "required" by string theory, what is being required? What qualifies as a dimension? There are supposedly 3 dimensions of space (length width and height), why isn't it the one "dimension" of volume? It's easy to see why a carpenter requires these 3 dimensions for measuring. Are they nothing more than a method of measurement? Why not say "Existence requires the two dimensions of volume and time?" That's what irks me. My inability to come to terms with the "known" dimensions makes the requirement of 7,8,9,10,or 11 more infuriating. Can you help?

When we think of minds, we think of our own minds and and don't acknowledge the explosion of ideas expressed by the natural world. Not only do we "have" minds, we are expressions of mind. The universe is a splendiferously realized mind. The wellspring of Mind's creativity is uncertainty. This uncertainty is even more fundamental than evolution as the driving force of our explosively exuberant world.

I swiped his credit card through the ticketek machine, probably the 100th time that night, and was struck dead in the follow through by the name that flashed up on the screen. I printed out his tickets, all the while brimming with a smile that was about to break free of my chest. I mulled it over quickly - let him pass or break my silence? How could I let such a mad coincidence lie unrecognised? As I handed him back his card and his ticekts I spilled the beans and my story and my smile fell forth from my lips. "I went to camp with you in year 5! Well you were in the year below me I think" "you have an amazing memory! Where was the camp?" "Narrabeen" "What school did you go to?" "St Margaret Mary's, yeah, and you went to what ever school you went to. I may have had a tiny crush on you when I was 10" Only 21 years had passed. Not so long :) A few awkward smiles and the queue shuffled on and he was gone. Well, I never.
