I definitely can't afford a ps3 or an xbox360 but as for my xbox and my ps2 i can tell you that virtual violence has, to a certain degree curbed my penchant for actual violence. i don't go out looking for fights nearly as often as i used to and thanks to a dozen or so good First Person Shooter titles like DOOM 3 and Halo and BLACK (o, destruction) i rarely spend more than a second imagining what it would be like to put a bullet or two (or a few dozen) through someone it's a great catharsis on those days when more pleasant forms stress-reduction are unavailable to me. so, in their own backhanded indirect way, videogames have prevented at least a lot of the crimes that I personally might feel inclined to commit. and god knows i've committed plenty in my life. |
