Sure..it seems to make no sense.
But what if the world(not society)knows what its doing? And the rich and their vaccines..are OUR catastrophic event, like the dinosaurs had?
Maybe this thing is sentient and knows how to defend itself from trash, whether spewed from the minds of the scientifically obsessed, or from the waste cans of those who worship their creations. Maybe it moves slowly and through it many parts. Maybe like a train, it starts slowly, but even at slow speeds..is irresistible.
Maybe 150 years of death and brainwashing was a rash we should have noticed. This is true of most religions: once there is power, there are the power hungry who feign progress toward higher aspirations but provide little in the way of actual advancement in the direction of a utopian ideal.
Take the modern scientific establishment, for instance. Little more than clerics dressed in the robes of technology, pretending to lead the human race into the future, while firmly fixing it in the past, by relying on the motivations of old money to determine its direction.
Little different than the Catholic Church, except the children are raped with needles and AI assisted, iPhone enhanced, conditioning.
