I don't think so...not in the sense that everyone thinks of it. Deciding what you want to do whenever you like and actually doingit arn't the same thing. Lots of people say "I could just quit and walk away." or "I could write really good books" but they rarely do. I think we make some major decisions, mostly without even really thinking of them, and this steers the general course of our lives. I don't, though, think we ever really break out and start doing things we were not meant to do. Basically, we start as a stem cell of the human race and eventually "become" whatever it is that we need to become. Time is finite, and though we change what we're doing, we never stay dynamic. Once part of our lives is used doing something, we'll always carry that with us as our experience and skills. Eventually we run out of time. Life is weird like that. You can do whatever you want but it will never be something that wasn't supposed to happen anyway. An apple can become a pie but it can't become a bicycle.

i have been thinking about randomness lately. if there is actual randomness in the universe, at the quantum level, then i can imagine that we have free will. but, if all quantum events are deterministic, then it seems like there can be no free will. do you think that the universe is predictable at the quantum level?

I wonder if everything can be brought down to logical progression or not. If not, everything is completely random so we have no control and thus no choice about what happens. IF everything boils down to a logical progression than there is a predetermined reaction for everything and we again find ourselves without control or choice.
