van gogh there is also another modern painter; gregory gillespie; paints on wooden canvases and his stuff is very surreal and creepy...you look into the eyes of the subjects and they seem trapped. i heard him lecture on his own work a few years ago and it was very cool.

of course the obvious van gough, then theres mary cassat, gauguin, Vermeer, Kimnt, Gerhard Richter,Toulouse-Lautrec,Joseph Cornell (although, he wasnt technically a painter...) and a thousand present day artist, whos names i cant remember because i am horrible at remembering names
