first the bible says "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooh" THEN the bible says "turn the other cheek", "let he without sin cast the first stone" Do you want a flip flopper for your moral compass? Do you want to turn the other cheek to terrorists? The bible: Weak on terrorism, weak on defense. Vote no on the bible in 04.

hmmm twisting the word there. Look at what eye for an eye etc. is for... Exodus 21:22-25 If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman's husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. " Matt 5: 39-42 "But I tell you not to resist," [aka oppose] "an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away. " Maybe you should read what you are yammering about a little more thoroughly.

yes...in one case it says that if a person harms another (pregnant wife in this case) then they shall have exacted from them whatever cost they incurred. and yet the other line says that if someone takes something from you, you give them more. The bible would have us not responding to terrorism with force, but offering our cities to them. Your putting the qoute back into its literal context does not remove the philosophy i correctly abstracted from them, and if anything merely clarifies it. The bible itself is riddled with contradictions. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone would seem to preclude any death penalty. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth would posit that in at least some situations violent retribution is allowed. However, turn the other cheek would suggest that this is never appropriate and that forgiveness and passivity is the only way. Noble sacrifice. You in no way answered any of the points made by inserting the complete qoutes. i'm so tired of the irrationality of most religion.

not really. he posits that there are no contradictions in the bible, but only "discrepancies," and that if we work hard enough, if we don't "take the easy way out," we'll be able to resolve those discrepancies. so i guess if you conclude that "eye for an eye" and "turn the other cheek" are contradictory, which by their plain meaning they clearly are, it just means you aren't working hard enough. so i'm going to try to not take the easy was out and synthesize those two rules. how about, "fool me once, shame on... you... fool me...... you can't get fooled again." no?

hey other guy i've spoken to many christians and some of them i actually respect but there isn't a single one of them who does not recognize a difference in tone between the old and new testaments the god of the old testament was a vengeful god who burned down cities and flooded the world to purge it of the evils of his own creation the christ of the new testament is all about peace and love and that kind of fruity hippy thing "an eye for an eye" and "turn the other cheek" means exactly what they sound like especially when put into their proper context
