"Religion has been the cause of more deaths than any other establishment."
That is blatantly and demonstrably FALSE.
This isnt a defense of organized religion. Its an attempt at Mythbusting tf out of a mistaken idea that is now touted as Gospel.
People make the mistake of assuming that the Inquisitions and the Holy Wars were a product of religion.
If we go back before Christianity, even further back before Judaism, we find wars being fought over territory. The more the territory was conducive to a good life, the more men of power (or seeking after that power) would be inclined to fight over it.
This then became fighting over crowns and titles. Again, where there is a good life, with less effort, you'll find greedy, power hungry people fighting over it.
Enter the Dark Ages. People are dying at any random age. All of the money and power in the world isn't keeping kings from dying of disease. Along comes the church, promising a good life NO MATTER if you died young or not. They promised you could keep living if you happened to be struck down in your prime.
They promised good life in a house of horrors filled with disease and desperation.
Well, wherever people submit to authority of ANY kind, greedy, power hungry people will want to fight for control of those people for the chance at a good life with little work.
Bishops were arguing with each other over religious truth like barbarians dueling for Alpha status. And when Islam came along? It was TWO religions fighting for control of the masses..for a good life with less effort.
We can see that politics is no different. Political systems promise a better life, with less effort and people rally behind those ideas. Then we have political wars instead of religious ones.
And after that science promised power and a good life with little work. And still people die in the name of its proclamations. (Fat causes obesity, not sugar..remember?) Homelessness and joblessness keep rising as automation "improves things".
And as people rallied around the power of science, guess who showed up to try to control the crowds?
Yep. The same greedy, lazy, power hungry types who want a good life with little work and don't care who they hurt to get it. The same people that killed others for control of a fertile valley, control of a kingdom, control of the afterlife, control of ideas, control of the facts. The same selfish babies who should have been spanked or drowned, but had nannies and wetnurses instead.
Religion isn't the problem. Science isn't the problem. Political ideas aren't the problem. Selfish babies who only think about themselves and their wants. That's ALWAYS been the problem. Since the beginning of human history..and probably before that.
