unhinged when a jazzer says the current state of jazz is masturbatory i feel vindicated

for being told my love of puccini was purile
for being told i was an idiot for not wanting to expand my technical vocabulary for music i thought was ugly

i love melody; maybe my definition of that word has expanded slightly over the years, but i still love the second movement of dvorak's ninth symphony because the MELODY is tearjerkingly beautiful. every time i listen to it, it brings tears to my eyes. every time.

music has always been about emotion for me.

reading a high level professional jazzer aspiring to the same goal makes me feel vindicated.

eat it all you scenester music school bitches. i have capitalism on my side.

no reason what did branford marsalis say?

i didn't really like jazz until i started to play it; that seemed to make it much easier to hear the melodies.

no reason i mean, who was he referring to specifically? 110918

unhinged and from what i can remember from the article he was referring to jazz in general, no one specific. he was probably trying to be professional and stuff.

if i remember right he was the marsalis brother that was into other kinds of music, including classical. he was in youngstown that week when he gave that lecture performing a trumpet concerto with the symphony.

I'm just glad someone on the forefront of contemporary modern music had the balls to say emotion and melody are still valid. john_cage fooled a lot of intellectual academic types into thinking the rest of the world gives a shit about ugly music.

ever dumbening strangely, i think winton--the most famous--is the only one i haven't seen perform live (though that might not be true). seeing delfeayo play at vaughan's in the 9th ward was the best though. 120211
