Dr. Phil's family and marital advice also come across as a means for Oprah to legitimize the strangely reactionary man-bashing she used to be so overtly guilty of back in the beginnings of her talk show. Plus, that accent gives him that whole "homespun" marketability angle which insures that the wal-mart shoppers and kool-aid drinkers will buy into his schtick regardless of how much of a hack he is. |
