sigur ros, the band from iceland, titled their new record {} because they want you to fill the parenthesis with your own interpretation. and so, as the robin hill crew filled a row in the 125 year old theatre in pittsburgh's cultural district, that's what we did, absolutely mesmerized by the unbelievable mix of art and music as it was presented. they played for a timeless two hours, taking the audience by the hand to individual places, far-reaching corners of the imagination, sealed tombs of memory, cliff edges of the future. we were stunned by the beauty, speechless until we could find words even attempting to capture what the soul had experienced. they played guitar with a bow, they beat the bass strings with a drumstick. they tingtangled a xylophone, blew birdsong out of flutes, anima- a violin/cello crew accompanied, all the while as scratchy, flickering films played on a large screen behind them of imagery, both haunting and visceral. i would look over at my loved ones from time to time, catching kate with tears on her face, dennis, eyes closed head moving to the rhythm, ingrid's curls buried in fyn's shoulders, fyn scribbling notes for affame le geant, jamie head in hands infatuated. breathless we were. changed. illuminated, enlightened. ready and equipped to help others fill their () ...by the way, the album leaf, from san diego opened the show and were very cool. check them out as well.
