it's 4am and i play hopscotch on the pavement squares to shake off the chill in my toes. it's so quiet i imagine hearing the sound of moonlight hitting the pavement, bouncing off the frosty windshields of parked cars, blanketing this side of the sleepy world. i'm antsy there stepping into the middle of the street although i know no cars are coming. it's safe now, it's safe now, but tension still remains. these lanes are made for cars, pedestrian traffic belongs on the sidewalk. and i picture wile e coyote looking both ways before crossing the quiet train tracks before you-know-what happens. just a few more seconds. still alive? yep. just needed a moment to cast out those demons of self-doubt. so i stroll back indoors, and face the destiny before me, the sleep that hits me like a fallen anvil.
