R. Dafremen Once upon a time in America Lived a man with a job And a pocket full of broken dreams "With my bills to pay There just ain't no way I'll ever rest before I die." Said the man, then he cried Because nothing's simple as it seems Nothing's simple as it seems When we're asked so young To do the right things right Not the right things wrong Or the wrong things right But there is noone To tell a young boy how to keep His hopes from chasing broken dreams. Once upon a time in America Lived a woman all alone With a lot of bitter memories "With my kids to feed And the clothes they need I'll never rest before I die" Said the woman as she cried "Never find a man to marry me." Never found him it seems Cuz she started so young To do the wrong things right And the right things wrong Not the right things right And there was noone To keep young men's passions From leaving her with bitter memories. And they said to me Boy be glad you're free Count your blessings everyday Because you were born American And I feel so free Til I start to see That we've lost so many things That made it great to be American So if you ask me We're really not that free When our money means more Than the children of America Bless the children of America Once upon a time in America Lived a lonely boy With a pain that he could show noone "Nobody cares for me Not my family Feel like I wanna die" Said the boy as he cried Then pulled the trigger on his daddy's gun. Pulled the trigger it seems Cuz since he was young He'd done the right things right Not the right things wrong Or the wrong things right But there was noone In his house to hear him out When he felt the pain that he would feel. And they said to me Boy be glad you're free Count your blessings everyday Because you were born American And I feel so free Til I start to see That we've lost so many things That made it great to be American So if you ask me We're really not that free When our careers mean more Than the children of America Bless the children of America Once upon a time in America Lived a couple with a child And a love that had become routine "She's not happy with me and I wanna be free" Said the man one night Left her after a fight Guess that nothing's simple as it seems. Nothing's simple as it seems When we start so young With the wrong things right In a happy home Til we cry all night Cuz we're all alone And our mother's at work And daddy's our weekend routine. And they said to me Boy be glad you're free Count your blessings everyday Because you were born American And I felt so free Til I started to see We gave up so many things That made it great to be American So if you ask me We're really not so free When our happiness means more Than the children of America Bless the children of America Yea if you asked me We will never be free Til we realize We've been living lies And the children we scar Chasing who we are Are all going to run America They're the future of America Bless the children of America
