It starts with a monk called Dharmakara, who practiced Buddhist Dharma under Tathagata Lokesvararaja. The monk made 48 great vows to save all sentient beings. Upon the fulfilment of these vows, he would create a Pure Land in the west called Sukhavati, which literally means the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
