(www.5rhythmsuk.com) Gabrielle Roth's 5 Rhythms are an exhilarating and liberating approach to the exploration of improvised movement and dance that is authentic, inspired and catalytic. The 5 Rhythms (Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, Stillness) are a map which can take you on an ecstatic journey, opening you to the inherent wisdom, creativity and energy of your body. They point you in a direction and then each individual finds their own dance through deep concentration, focus, and the willingness to follow energy into the magical landscapes of improvised movement. Since the first beat of the first drum, dance and the language of rhythm have been one of the most direct routes to ecstatic experience. Dance bridges the personal, community and spirit worlds. 5 Rhythms work can be meditative, expressive, fun, and transformative. This work gives you the opportunity to find freedom of movement, states of heightened awareness, profound healing and the inspiration for living a creative and fulfilling life. The 5 Rhythms map has been developed by Gabrielle Roth over a lifetime of study in dance, theatre and the healing arts. It is a map which can catalyze the dancer into a direct experience of 'embodying the spirit. The work seeks to bridge the divide between the physical body (matter) and spirit. It is also an inspiration and support for creative work in all fields. The work is for everyone who longs to dance and to be free. It is for experienced or inexperienced dancers and those who so far have only danced in their imagination or behind closed doors. It is open to people of all ages, shapes, fitness, abilities and backgrounds. You are welcome to come and dance for your life. We teach improvised movement within the structure of the 5 Rhythms. The nature of this work is free, evolving and artistic. Its power emanates from the willingness of the dancer to be a curious and courageous explorer on the bridge between movement study and spiritual practice. The dancer is encouraged to trust their own experience. The very heart of this work is the desire so many of us have to learn from our own experience and embody our own answers. As Gabrielle says: "The task is to transform our suffering into art." We study three different areas of relationship. The relationship with self, one-to one relationship, and the dancer's relationship as a tribal individual to the whole. Just as with any discipline, patience, sustained effort and practice bring their rewards. 5 Rhythms practice is a source for artistic expression, inner healing, energy for life and natural ecstasy. The 5 Rhythms map describes a shamanic journey. It starts with freeing the body (Waves) and moves through the landscapes of releasing the heart (Heartbeat), ceremony (Patterns in the Sand/Snow), freeing the mind and soul retrieval (Cycles and Mirrors), and arrives in what Gabrielle describes as The Silver Desert, or the home of the spirit. It is a radical journey which demands a total marriage of spirit and flesh, of the energy and the physical bodies, of poetic freedom and pragmatic action. Warning: This work can be catalytic and provocative. The work is not therapy though it can be therapeutic and healing. Each dancer is required to take responsibility for their own process and to organise their own support system if needed. There is a growing community of dancers and teachers offering classes, peer groups and Sweat Your Prayers groups around the UK and Europe where dancers can go to continue their practice.
